Matthews went straight to PK Subban, Tie Domi after Leafs OT goal

TSN’s broadcast cameras might not have picked up on it, but it appears that Auston Matthews made time to sneak in a little hello to some old pals after winning the game for the Toronto Maple Leafs last night.

Matthews sprung open on a breakaway last night in overtime against the New Jersey Devils, and slotted home the 2-1 goal to pick up the two points on the evening for Toronto.

After the goal, Matthews was seen pointing to the crowd as part of a celebration, a quick glance that could’ve gone mostly unnoticed as a fairly typical move for a player to do after a big goal.

It turns out the point was directed at former Devils defenceman PK Subban, who was sitting in the front row of the Prudential Center for last night’s contest.

Uploading his angle of the goal to Instagram, a little freeze-frame from the clip shows Matthews going full speed in his celebration, but clearly sneaking in a little hello to Subban before getting mobbed by his teammates.

The point also could’ve been directed at Subban’s seatmates, with Tie Domi, Devils great Ken Daneyko and Devils owner David Blitzer all sitting in the same row as him.

Though Subban made his name as an NHLer in his days with the Montreal Canadiens, it appears any old feelings about the Leafs from the rivalry are long behind him given his enthusiasm in uploading the clips.

The goal was Matthews’ 13th regular season overtime winner of his career.

Despite missing nine games this year due to injury, Matthews has nine goals and 10 assists in 19 games this season.

The win itself wasn’t Toronto’s prettiest, as the Leafs were outshot 38-17 on the evening.

But Leafs coach Craig Berube didn’t seem too concerned with the shot clock, given the ultimate result.

“It is one of those games,” Berube said postgame. “I am not really going to read into it too much. I am not going to talk about it too much. Our goalie was excellent, and we found a way to get two points. That is all that matters.”
