Toronto Maple Leafs players rallying around a new playoff slogan

The Toronto Maple Leafs appear to have quietly found a new slogan that the players are rallying around.

In a video put out by the team following their Game 1 victory over the Ottawa Senators in the opening round of the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs, Toronto has unveiled the “No Grit, No Grind, No Greatness” slogan on a board located in their dressing room.

As has become tradition for many teams around the league, the board contains a game puck for each victory the Leafs earn in the playoffs, with the end goal to fill it with 16 pucks over the course of four postseason rounds.

With the team not advertising it on social media (outside of a quick shot of it in the one video), it appears to be targeted at just the Leafs’ players and staff.

Past Toronto Maple Leafs slogans

While some teams have maintained a single main slogan throughout their history, Toronto has used several over recent years.

The most well-known team slogan is likely “The Passion That Unites Us All”, often shortened to “The Passion” by Leafs fans online.

The team also toyed with the “Raising the Standard” slogan in 2021, though that doesn’t appear to have stuck around. Another phrase they’ve commonly used is “Forever” or “Leafs Forever”, showing the fans’ lifelong commitment to the team.

In 2023, they kept things simple for the playoffs, with “Let’s Go” as their rallying cry on merchandise and fan towels that year.

“Burn the Boats” was a mantra once used by former team coach Randy Carlyle, in reference to Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés, who reportedly burned his boats upon reaching land in Mexico to signify that he had no intent of returning to his homeland.

Given that Carlyle’s Leafs made the playoffs just once in four seasons and suffered the most infamous collapse in team history with a 5-4 overtime loss, it’s safe to say this mantra also won’t be returning any time soon.

Currently, the Leafs also have the “Honour. Pride. Courage.” mantra located on their jerseys and throughout the locker room.
