This isn’t the first time Toronto Hydro has had to address scams revolving around people posing as representatives of the company. As such, a whole section of their website is dedicated to educating consumers on how to spot and stop fraud.
In addition to door-to-door visits, scammers will contact customers through phone, text message, email, and fake electricity bills, and tend to request electronic payments or threaten to disconnect power, among other actions.
Customers are asked to know their account numbers, and if suspicious of a bill, to refer to a past invoice for comparison.
The company recommends customers not to provide any personal information by phone, email or text, not to make any payments, and to contact Toronto Hydro’s Customer Care department at 416-542-8000 if you suspect any type of fraud.
Additionally, customers can report suspicious activity to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 and quote file number 844396.
