You’re going to want to call your friends who have access to a pool today because it could feel as hot as 40ºC in Toronto.

Today is the third day of Environment Canada’s Special Weather Statement, which was issued due to high daytime temperatures expected Wednesday through Friday.

“A relatively hot and humid airmass has reached the area and will remain in place through Friday,” reads the statement.

“Maximum afternoon temperatures near 30 degrees and humidex values in the high thirties are forecast for most areas with slightly cooler temperatures near the shores of the Great Lakes.”

Temperatures reached a high of 26ºC on Wednesday, which was followed by 29ºC on Thursday. However, temperatures will continue rising on Friday, with a high of 30ºC expected, but with humidex values this will feel closer to 40ºC, according to The Weather Network.

The high temperature and humidity will be joined by the risk of thunderstorms, which could begin in the afternoon and last through Saturday afternoon.

Whatever you get up to this afternoon, make sure to drink plenty of water and keep as cool as possible.

There are also a number of actions individuals can take to beat the heat and stay safe:

  • Wear loose, light-coloured, breathable clothing.
  • Avoid the sun and stay in the shade or use an umbrella.
  • Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day.
  • Take cool showers or baths or use cool wet towels to cool down.
  • Do not leave a person or pet inside a parked car.
  • Consult with your doctor or pharmacist to learn how your medications could increase your risk to heat.
  • Check on at-risk family, friends or neighbours, especially seniors living alone.
