Toronto City Council backs proposal to impose toll roads on Gardiner and DVP
Toll roads are very likely coming to Toronto.
Mayor John Tory’s proposed plans to impose toll roads on the DVP and Gardiner Expressway has been backed, 32 to 9, in the latest city council vote.
City Council has voted strongly in favour of getting Toronto moving by supporting tolls on the DVP/Gardiner. #TimeTOBuild

Councillors representing suburban areas such as Etobicoke, Scarborough, and North York criticized the idea and cautioned that their constituents would oppose the tolls and vowed to protect their interests, but the overwhelming support will see toll roads explored as a way to pay for maintenance costs as well as fund transit projects.
A final decision on toll roads is not expected until sometime in 2017. If approved, Torontonians can expect tolls to be phased in beginning in 2019 and fully implemented by 2024.
