At the 43rd Toronto International Film Festival, moviegoers can look forward to a diverse group of films showcasing homegrown talent from all corners of the country.
Film buffs can enjoy 54 Canadian films at this year’s festival with 40% of them directed by women.
This year’s lineup includes work from notable Canadian filmmakers such as Jennifer Baichwal, Nicholas de Pencier, Ron Mann, Barry Avrich, and Edward Burtynsky, while newcomers Akash Sherman, Jasmin Mozaffari, Andrea Bussmann, Edenshaw, Haig-Brown, de Pencier, Zach Lipovsky, and Adam Stein will have their debuts.
A highlight of the festival will be a Special Event World Premiere and tribute showcasing the documentary Sharkwater Extinction, the final work by the late Toronto filmmaker and conservationist Rob Stewart.
Stewart passed away in 2017 while working on the film, a follow-up to his 2006 documentary Sharkwater.
From films that showcase Canada’s Indigenous talent to women-centric stories with strong female leads, here are all the Canadian films screening at TIFF this year.
