The Toronto Blue Jays’ relatively strong start to the 2025 season is quickly beginning to fall apart.
The Blue Jays are currently in the midst of a four-game losing streak, and now sit third in the AL East with a 12-12 record. Such losing streaks aren’t uncommon over the course of a 162-game schedule, but there are several areas this team is struggling in which are starting to be a cause for concern.
Struggling to produce offence
One of the biggest struggles for the Blue Jays this season has been scoring runs. Toronto has just 87 runs through 24 games, which is tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates for 24th in MLB. A big reason for that lack of production is that they aren’t hitting home runs. They currently sit second last amongst all teams with just 13 long balls on the season.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has managed just one home run so far, while free-agent signing Anthony Santander has really struggled. The 30-year-old has just two home runs and eight RBIs along with an extremely disappointing .196 batting average and 23 strikeouts through 92 at-bats.
Bo Bichette is currently leading the way for Toronto with 13 RBIs on the season, which is quite something given that four players in MLB have already reached 25.
Starting rotation concerns
Also not boding well for the Blue Jays is that there are some concerns about their pitching rotation this early into the season. The trio of Chris Bassitt, Kevin Gausman, and Bowden Francis have all been pretty good to date, though Jose Berrios has struggled with a 5.02 ERA through five starts.
Berrios’ early-season struggles aren’t a major concern given that he has a lengthy track record of being a very good starter. The bigger concern, however, is the fifth spot in their rotation.
Max Scherzer has pitched just three innings this season, which is a major cause for concern given all the time he missed in 2024. Easton Lucas struggled in his limited opportunity and was recently demoted to Triple-A Buffalo.
Prospect Jake Bloss may be an option to fill the spot in the short term, though he is also far from a sure thing, having made only three career starts to date. Yariel Rodriguez could also get a shot in the rotation, though he was rather uninspiring through 21 starts a season ago.
The Blue Jays will be looking to get back into the win column tonight versus the Houston Astros, though if these struggles continue for much longer, it will be cause for major concern in Toronto.
