Though his future is no longer in question, there are some concerns about Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s start to the season with the Toronto Blue Jays.
There was some concern heading into the 2025 season that Guerrero’s contract situation could become a bit of a distraction for not only himself, but the entire Blue Jays roster. That issue has since been resolved, with the 26-year-old slugger agreeing to a 14-year, US$500-million deal last week.
The focus now turns to Guerrero’s 2025 season to date, which, so far, hasn’t been very good. Though the Blue Jays have fared relatively well with a 9-8 record through 17 games, their star first baseman has struggled. While his .284 batting average is respectable, he’s yet to hit a home run and has just seven RBIs.
The homerless stretch goes longer for Guerrero as well, as he failed to hit a dinger in his final nine games of the 2024 season. As a result, he’s gone 26 straight games without a longball, marking the second-longest drought of his career. The longest came during the 2019 and 2020 seasons, where he went a combined 31 games, as per Stathead Baseball.
Home runs have been harder to come by for Guerrero since his 48-homer outbreak during the 2021 season, though he still managed 30 in 2024. Fans should expect a similar output in 2025, though if this drought goes too much longer, some concern may start to mount. The Jays could certainly use him getting hot at the dish, as they’ve managed just nine long balls through their 17 outings this season.
