Toronto Blue Jays have a lucky cap and here's the story behind it

A nerve-filled final week of the regular season had a happy ending for the Toronto Blue Jays.

And we have their lucky cap to thank.

Just four days ago, the AL East Division title was in danger of slipping away to the surging New York Yankees.

The Blue Jays had lost six of seven games, while the Yankees had won seven of eight and had an easy remaining schedule.

It felt like the sky was falling.

That’s when Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman had an idea: change the cap.

Hoffman has been credited with the late-season wardrobe change, as the Blue Jays turned to their seldom-used white-panel caps. The white-panel cap with the modernized logo was introduced back in 2015, but hadn’t been used this season until Thursday.

After getting clearance from Major League Baseball to wear them, Toronto won 6-1 with their white-panel caps and have been sporting them ever since, with the exception of Friday’s City Connect uniform night. With their lucky caps on, the Jays beat Tampa Bay 5-1 on Saturday and 13-4 on Sunday.

“Boy oh boy, the white-panel caps really did the trick,” Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae said to Hoffman during the clubhouse champagne celebration.

Hoffman downplayed his obvious stroke of genius.

“I guess they did. I don’t think it’s anything to do with the hats; it’s the talent and the character of the guys in here. You give them a goal to accomplish and they go get it.”

Fair enough.

But I think we all know what hats the Blue Jays will be wearing when their postseason series begins on Saturday.
