Toronto Blue Jays make another move in Guerrero contract talks: report

Despite the front office being confident something will be worked out, the Toronto Blue Jays and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. are still struggling to find common ground on an extension.

This ongoing saga between the two sides will continue to dominate headlines until something is resolved, as Blue Jays fans are growing increasingly worried by the lack of progress.

Guerrero had initially said he would not be open to discussing a contract extension during the season, perhaps as a negotiation tactic to try and get something resolved ahead of time. That didn’t come to fruition, despite the fact the first baseman revealed he was asking for less than $600 million on a 15-year deal.

It’s unlikely that he will come down much lower than that price. Guerrero is widely regarded as one of the best hitters in baseball and is coming off of a season in which he hit .323 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs. The problem is that the Blue Jays front office doesn’t appear to be budging much, either.

“The Blue Jays have made another offer in their negotiations with Vladimir Guerrero, per sources,” ESPN’s Buster Olney wrote on X this morning. “A gap still remains between the two sides.”

The positive news for Jays fans is that the two sides are clearly still having dialogue, though the fact that such a gap still remains is cause for concern. Losing the face of the franchise via free agency or a potential trade before the end of the season could signal an outright rebuild for the organization.

On top of Guerrero’s uncertain future, there are also plenty of question marks about the Blue Jays’ other star talent, Bo Bichette. The two-time All-Star is also set to hit free agency at season’s end, meaning the Blue Jays could wind up losing the two pillars of their franchise in a rather short time.
