Toronto Blue Jays make pair of cuts including one everyday player

The Toronto Blue Jays are continuing to trim down their roster ahead of Opening Day next Thursday.

After cutting nine players on Thursday, the Blue Jays announced another pair of cuts this afternoon. Infielder Leo Jimenez, along with outfielder Joey Loperfido, have both been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.

Loperfido was acquired by the Jays alongside Jake Bloss and Will Wagner in a deal that saw Yusei Kikuchi head to the Houston Astros. The 25-year-old wound up playing in 43 games with the Blue Jays down the stretch after the trade but failed to impress, hitting just .197 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 144 plate appearances.

As for Jimenez, he was able to make his MLB debut with the Blue Jays in 2024. The 23-year-old had 210 plate appearances in 63 games, hitting .229 with four home runs and 19 RBIs. He had really struggled in spring training, hitting just .192 through 14 games.

Much like yesterday’s cuts of Bloss, Mason Fluharty, Kevin Gowdy, Hayden Juenger, Dillon Tate, Josh Walker, Jonatan Clase, and Orelvis Martinez, neither of today’s options come as a major surprise. Both are players that could wind up seeing time with the Blue Jays later this season, however, whether it be due to injury or struggles.

The Blue Jays are now down to 30 players on their active roster with just two more spring training games to go. They will need to get that number down to 26 by the time their season opener versus the Baltimore Orioles rolls around on Friday afternoon.
