The Toronto Blue Jays are continuing to trim their roster as they inch closer and closer to Opening Day.
The 2025 MLB season is exactly one week out, as the Blue Jays are set to host the Baltimore Orioles in their season opener next Thursday in the first of a four-game series. With just three spring training games left on their schedule, they chose to cut an additional nine players this afternoon.
Pitchers Mason Fluharty, Kevin Gowdy, and Hayden Juenger, along with catcher Matt Whatley, have all been reassigned to Minor League camp. Meanwhile, pitchers Jake Bloss, Dillon Tate, and Josh Walker, as well as Jonatan Clase and Orelvis Martinez, have been assigned to Triple-A.
None of these cuts come as a major surprise, though Tate has logged 190 games and 215.2 innings at the MLB level over five seasons. The 30-year-old was picked off of waivers by the Jays last September. In four games, he had a 5.40 through 3.1 innings.
Tate was just recently re-signed, however, and wasn’t able to appear in any spring training games. The decision to option him to Triple-A was likely, at least in part, a decision made to allow him to rebuild his arm strength at the Minor League level.
Another name Jays fans will recognize on this list is Martinez. The 23-year-old put up 17 home runs and 49 RBIs in just 74 games with Triple-A Buffalo and was able to make his MLB debut in June. Shortly after that debut, however, he was given an 80-game suspension after testing positive for a banned substance. He’s currently listed as the Blue Jays’ third-best prospect.
With the roster moves, the Blue Jays now have 32 players remaining. They will need to make some difficult decisions on a few more ahead of their season opener to fall in line with the MLB’s mandated 26-man roster.
