Toronto Blue Jays cut ties with another veteran pitcher

The Toronto Blue Jays appear to be cutting ties with another veteran arm.

The Jays announced this afternoon that they have designated Spencer Turnbull for assignment. The 32-year-old had been signed by the club in early May after entering the 2025 season as a free agent.

Turnbull, who has been used primarily as a starter throughout his 162-game career, made three appearances for the Blue Jays, one of which was a start. His stint didn’t go as he would have liked, as he had a 7.11 ERA while giving up 12 hits through just 6.1 innings.

The decision to DFA Turnbull was made by the Blue Jays to activate Max Scherzer from the 60-day IL. The 40-year-old has pitched just three innings this season, as he suffered a thumb injury that wound up sidelining him far longer than first imagined. He wound up making two rehab appearances in Buffalo and was deemed ready to go for today’s start versus the Cleveland Guardians.

Interestingly enough, the Blue Jays also recently elected to cut ties with pitcher Jose Urena, whom they signed the exact same day as Turnbull. Urena wound up electing free agency and latched on with the LA Dodgers for a brief period before heading to the Minnesota Twins organization. Fans should fully expect to see Turnbull elect for free agency as well.

The Blue Jays made another pitching move this morning, acquiring right-hander Robinson Piña from the Miami Marlins in exchange for pitching prospect Colby Martin. Piña is viewed as more of a depth arm for Triple-A Buffalo, but has three option years remaining and could get a look in Toronto should they run into injury trouble further down the line.
