Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bichette makes positive step in injury recovery

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette is doing everything in his power to return to the lineup in the near future.

The 27-year-old hasn’t played since early September, after suffering a PCL strain in his left knee. The injury was initially believed to be short-term, but it has continued to bother Bichette to the point where the Jays chose to leave him off their ALDS roster.

Though the Jays still have to get there, the ALCS won’t begin until Sunday, giving some optimism that Bichette may be able to be a part of that series, whether right from the beginning or partway through. While that remains to be seen, he was spotted doing some light running drills for the first time at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday morning.

The positive here is that it marks the first time Bichette has been spotted doing any sort of running since suffering his injury. On the flip side, however, he was maintaining a very slow pace, and, as per Blue Jays reporter Keegan Matheson, didn’t appear to be very comfortable afterward when walking back to the dugout.

This marks the second time this week that we’ve heard about Bichette looking uncomfortable. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal had similar comments in an appearance on Foul Territory on Monday.

“He is not walking like a guy who is fully healthy,” Rosenthal said. “He’s got a bit of a limp.”

Despite being limited to just 139 games this season, Bichette’s 181 hits were tied for the second most amongst all MLB players. The two-time All-Star slashed .311 with 94 RBI and a .840 OPS this season.

The Jays have been able to manage without Bichette so far, as they hold a 2-1 series lead over the Yankees and are just one win away from punching their ticket to the ALCS. Should they do so, they will face whoever comes out on top of a series between the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers.
