Toronto Blue Jays' Berrios took to Central Park to work on pitching routine

Jose Berrios is making the most of his time as he and the Toronto Blue Jays are in New York for a three-game series versus the Yankees.

Berrios who pitched in yesterday’s 4-2 victory, had a rather unusual off day on Thursday, opting to do work on his pitching routine in Central Park. The 30-year-old, along with bullpen catcher Luis Hurtado, chose the scenic area to work on his arsenal.

The routine wound up working well for Berrios, who went 5.1 innings in Friday’s win, giving up zero earned runs while racking up four strikeouts. It was one of the sharper appearances for the two-time All Star, who has gotten off to a rather shaky start this season, posting a 4.24 ERA through 34 innings.

As it turns out, this wasn’t Hurtado’s first time catching for a Blue Jays pitcher in Central Park. Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae revealed on Friday’s broadcast that he once did the same thing with former Jays starter Yusei Kikuchi.

Whether it was getting loose in Central Park or perhaps just himself getting back on track, Berrios’ performance was huge for the Blue Jays, who had entered Friday’s game having lost five straight. The win allowed them to improve their record to 13-13, which is good enough for third in the AL-East.

The Blue Jays will have a double-header versus the Yankees today, before beginning a three-game series versus another divisional opponent in the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.
