A staple Toronto pizza restaurant just closed down after almost a decade

A Toronto pizza restaurant that’s held court on one of the city’s most popular streets for almost a decade has inexplicably closed its doors.

The debate surrounding where, exactly, serves the best pizza in Toronto is about as contentious as that of who makes the best Jamaican patties or whether the Leafs will ever win the Stanley Cup, but a few standouts seem to score a place on almost everyone’s list.

There’s Badiali, of course, as well as Mac’s Pizza, Maker, Blondies, and North of Brooklyn, all names that regularly populate the “best pizza in Toronto” lexicon. There’s also, nestled in a faux-dingy space on Ossington, the much-loved Superpoint.

Founded by Jesse Fader and Jonny Poon, the team behind the now-defunct Bar Fancy, among a slew of other projects that include Extra Burger, Nice Nice, Paris Paris and, most recently for Poon, Taberna Lx, Superpoint instantly solidified its spot among the thin-crusted heavy hitters of the city.

Located in a quaint, cozy space that felt ripped straight from some no-name corner in New York City, the restaurant, despite only offering a handful of tables, has since become a staple, maintaining its title for the past nine years.

Now, though, it seems as though Superpoint is turning a new leaf after the restaurant suddenly closed its doors after a final service on Sunday, Aug. 24.

In a Reddit thread about the closure, one recent customer confirms that they were informed of the restaurant’s imminent closure during a recent visit.

“They’re definitely closing… happened to have a reso today and was told it’s their last night of business :((( left in total shock,” the Reddit user writes on the evening of Sunday, Aug. 24.

For Superpoint’s part, though, little has been offered by way of explanation for the reasons behind the closure and what’s coming next. To date, all that remains of Superpoint’s online presence is their Instagram account, which has been completely wiped save for a single image with the caption, “THANKS 4 COMING. BRB.”

Echoing the sentiment of its caption, the Instagram account’s bio reads, “Be right back,” suggesting that Superpoint isn’t gone forever but is merely undergoing a metamorphosis of sorts.

We just hope that whatever new-and-improved concept is on the way still includes Superpoint’s casual, lighthearted vibes and, more importantly, its droolworthy lineup of NYC-style pizzas.

Dished Toronto reached out to Superpoint for further details on the reasoning behind the closure and what’s coming next, but has not received a response at the time of publication.
