Raptors fans think purple jerseys are coming back after team drops hints

The Toronto Raptors appear to be hinting at something, though it’s not 100% sure exactly what it entails.

The return to purple jerseys is one the franchise’s fans have been clamouring for years to see once again, and the team seems to be at least hinting that it could be a possibility for next season.

As flagged by X user 6ixthmannorm, the Raptors keep using purple heart emojis to end their tweets ahead of next week’s NBA Draft.

The tweets themselves all featured throwback photos from drafts of Toronto’s past draft picks, mostly from the team’s early years.

Toronto used purple as one of its primary colours from 1995 to 2006, but it hasn’t regularly featured for the franchise in nearly two decades, with only the odd throwback jersey making an appearance, last doing so in the 2020 NBA bubble during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NBA Draft is set for June 26 and 27 in Brooklyn, New York, with Toronto holding the 19th and 31st overall picks.

If the Raptors do return to their iconic purples, either full or part-time, it would likely coincide with the team’s honouring of their first superstar player, Vince Carter, who is set to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame later this summer.

“It’s a secret,” Ujiri said at his end-of-season press conference in response to a question asked by Daily Hive about plans to honour Carter next year.

“Love him, he’s the best,” Ujiri added. “Everything, just like we’re going through here, has ups and downs… I think what Vince has done as a player, not only the length of his career but how he’s carried himself.”

Carter will be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame this coming August, with the festivities taking place on August 16 and 17.
