This Kensington Market gem offers must-try Indigenous tacos in Toronto

Jan 11 2019, 10:01 pm

There’s a tiny spot in Kensington market that’s serving up tacos and daily brunch infused with traditional Indigenous flavours.

If you haven’t tasted the dishes at PowWow Cafe, you’ve got to visit, stat.

The regular menu is simple, offering four different types of tacos: the traditional beef with cumin sour cream, chicken shawarma, seafood with salmon and mussels, and a vegetarian red lentil coconut curry.

These babies are so loaded, you can barely see the fry bread underneath.

Appetizers include “Pow Wow Style” corn soup with smoked duck, jumbo scone dogs and smoked salmon croquettes.

The (woodburned) brunch menu is more extensive, offering items like smoked salmon and poached egg with goat cheese over fry bread, and a three-egg frittata topped with butternut squash, goat cheese and beet.

The dishes are vibrant and the small, cozy space is filled with the mouthwatering scent of spices.

And if you wake up late, feeling particularly less-than, you can count on brunch being available until 3 pm every day.
