Police officer punched in the face while enforcing social distancing order

An officer with the Toronto Police Service was allegedly assaulted on Friday, April 17, while issuing a social distancing order.

According to a police news release, at approximately 1:50 pm, officers were dispatched to the Mornelle Court and Ellesmere Road area for a reported assault.

It is alleged that a municipal by-law officer approached two men for the purpose of enforcing social distancing orders.

One man proceeded to yell at the by-law officer and, apparently punched him in the face with a cell phone.

According to the release, both men fled the scene.

The by-law officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The man, later identified as Thipakaran Navaratnam, 45, of Toronto, was located shortly after and arrested.

Navaratnam was changed with:

  • Assault Peace officer and use of a Weapon
  • Assault Peace Officer
  • Breach of Recognizance, Sec 811

He was also issued tickets for:

  • Enter into area of park posted to prohibit/restrict admission
  • Smoke tobacco prohibited place
  • Care & control motor vehicle liquor readily available

The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, July 29. 2020.
