Pair of key Blue Jays getting closer to returning for Toronto

The Toronto Blue Jays could be getting some reinforcements in the near future.

And for the time being, their top minor league affiliate is going to have a few big-name ticket attractions, at least for a short while.

As per MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson, George Springer is set to play on Wednesday with the International League’s Buffalo Bisons, joining teammate Andres Gimenez in the process.

Springer has been sidelined since last Monday after taking a pitch off the helmet in a game against the Baltimore Orioles, while Gimenez has been out since July 5 with a left ankle sprain.

The Bisons take the field on the road against the Worcester Red Sox, with first pitch set for 6:45 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on MILB.tv.

The Blue Jays themselves are in the midst of a six-game road trip to Colorado and Los Angeles, wrapping up against the Dodgers this Sunday. If the Jays don’t bring back Gimenez or Springer before the end of the road trip, look for them to possibly return next Tuesday when Toronto hosts the Chicago Cubs.

How has Springer played for the Blue Jays this year?

Though Springer hasn’t always looked like a four-time All-Star during his four seasons in Toronto, his 2025 campaign is shaping up to arguably be his best yet with the Blue Jays.

His 2.3 WAR has already surpassed the 2023 and 2024 seasons, while his .889 OPS is the fourth-best of his career and his best in Toronto since 2021.

The 35-year-old is certainly closer to the end of his MLB career than the start, but he’s showing exactly why Toronto felt comfortable offering him a six-year deal in 2021 that was then the largest in team history.
