Ontario schools report 129 new COVID-19 cases, 8 closures

The Government of Ontario reports 129 new COVID-19 cases in schools on Friday, with eight school closures across the province.

According to the provincial government, 102 cases reported today are student-related, and 27 are staff-related. Ontario schools reported 299 total cases.

The new total has now reached 5,266 since back to school.

There have been 1,445 school-related cases in just two weeks, with 3,821 reported 14 or more days before that.

The numbers are announced daily at 10:30 am on the province’s school and childcare centre coronavirus-tracking website.

Out of the total cases recorded since September, about 65% have been from students.

The province now reports eight school closures out of the 776 schools that have cases.

As for licensed childcare centres, there are now 870 total confirmed cases with 137 centres and 463 homes closed.

Three staff members at a Toronto school walked off the job on Thursday morning after the asymptomatic COVID-19 testings reported a number of cases among students and staff.

On Friday, Toronto Public Health ordered Thorncliffe Park Public School to close after 26 positive cases at the school were reported.

The provincial government confirmed 1,780 new COVID-19 cases on Friday morning, with over 600 coming from Toronto.

This is a decrease from Thursday’s 1,824, but an increase from Wednesday’s 1,723Tuesday’s 1,707, Sunday’s 1,708, Monday’s 1,746.
