NHL makes mid-game official switch and Toronto Maple Leafs fans think he’s biased against them

Every NHL fan base has that one referee they’re convinced is out to get their team.

For the Toronto Maple Leafs, that’s Wes McCauley. The veteran official has worked many Leafs games over the years, and their record in big moments has been less than stellar.

The Leafs went 0-9 from 2018 to 2023 in playoff games that McCauley officiated.

The good news for Leafs fans is that McCauley hasn’t been assigned to officiate any of their playoff games so far this season. However, he still somehow managed to end up working part of Game 2 between the Leafs and the Florida Panthers.

Linesman Shandor Alphonso couldn’t continue after the second intermission due to an injury. The Leafs were nursing a 3-2 lead and needed to get through 20 more minutes to take a commanding 2-0 series lead. To many Leafs fans’ horror, it was McCauley who stepped in for the injured Alphonso for the third period. He was working as the replacement official for this contest.

The sight of McCauley taking the ice, even if just as a linesman, caused a frenzy with a subset of Leafs fans. They took to social media to complain and voice their fears about any potential bias.

McCauley is a veteran referee who made his debut in 2003 and became a full-time NHL official in the 2005-06 season. He’s officiated 10 Stanley Cup Finals, with his first one being in 2013.

All that experience doesn’t make Leafs fans any more comfortable with him working their games. They’ve been scarred by countless losses in recent postseason runs.

“Wes McCauley is in, it’s over,” said one fan on X.

“Not Wes McCauley…,” commented another Leafs fan on Reddit.

“So, Wes McCauley is acting as a linesman, but Toronto never wins when he is an official. I wonder how this is going to go,” posted yet another fan on X.

The good news for those worried Leafs fans is that McCauley acted just as a linesman and not as a main referee. It’s much harder to make a big impact on the game as a linesman, although a bad icing call could always make the difference late.

The Leafs ended up holding on for a 4-3 victory with Mitch Marner scoring the game-winning goal.
