Even Florida libraries are roasting Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs appear to have a new enemy: a Floridian public library system.

No, the Leafs aren’t launching an attack on education or creating much of a real stink, but they became the target of what equates to a librarian’s diss track on Wednesday afternoon ahead of a pivotal Game 2 in their second-round series against the Florida Panthers.

For those who aren’t from or have a deep connection to Toronto, the Leafs are often a punching bag for people from just about wherever else, especially come playoff time. Given their massive fanbase and history of playoff failures, the franchise has become a natural easy target.

And it appears that the Broward County Library, which operates 37 branch locations in the area surrounding the Panthers’ home city of Sunrise, is getting involved in those rooting against the Leafs’ success.

It appears the beef — albeit a friendly one — began when the Toronto Public Library staff hopped onto X with a poem and a series of books suggesting that the Leafs would down the Panthers to take a 2-0 series lead against the defending Stanley Cup champions.

“Panthers are red/ The Leafs are blue/ Tonight is the night That we win Game 2,” the Toronto Public Library posted on X.

“We love Toronto / Their team is quite nice / But the Florida Panthers? / Well, we rule the ice!” the Florida library’s response clapped back.

The poem was also accompanied by a children’s book published in 2000 written by Zoe Hall titled Fall Leaves Fall,  a play on the team’s name often brought up by their detractors.

In a climate where conversations about education, U.S.-Canada relations, and even hockey can turn quite nasty in a snap, the friendly banter between the two libraries is a nice reminder that sports are meant to be fun.

While we aren’t sure how the series between the two teams will end up on the ice, we’ll keep an eye out for any other public services starting friendly internet beefs of their own.
