Mooncakes are among the customary ways to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, kicking off this year on September 13.
In Toronto, you’ll find the sweet treat at Asian bakeries, where the embossed pastries are filled with sweet, dense fillings or oozing salted egg centres.

The self-proclaimed “modern Euro-Asian bakery and cafe” celebrates the Mid-Autumn season with limited edition mooncakes (preorder online). Flavours include matcha red bean black sesame, taro, and OG lotus paste all with molten egg yolk centres. Meanwhile, a vegetarian version features lotus paste with cranberries and walnuts.

This Thai adaption of the popular Mid-Autumn dessert is available all year round. According to the dessert-makers website, Thai Mooncakes are “influenced by the Chaozhou-style of Chinese Mooncakes which comprises of handmade thin spiral-shaped crust and it is uniquely smoked with candle scent.” These goodies are available with taro and mung bean fillings.
