A massive artificial moon is going to rise above The Bentway next month

You’re going to have another reason to visit The Bentway this summer.

Starting on September 10, The Bentway is going to transform into an open-air planetarium, complete with a massive glowing moon that will light up below the Gardiner Expressway.

The presentation is called Museum of the Moon, which is a touring artwork, and it will feature a week-long celebration of “the moon and our relationship to its rhythms.”

The week is anchored by a seven-metre wide sculptural work by UK artist Luke Jerram, which uses lunar imagery to bring the moon’s surface to life on earth.

Featuring detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface and an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally lit moon represents 5 km of the moon’s actual surface.

There will be, of course, other activities taking place throughout the moon-filled week, including nightly moonlit meditation sessions, free astronomy talks, photo-based installations, and much more. Food and drinks will also be available.

The week will culminate with a special event on September 14, as a full harvest moon rises over Toronto, with Moon Merge.

Mood Merge will include a live podcast recording from Pondercast, exploring how urbanites merge with the natural world. The evening will also include a sing-a-long by Toronto-based group Choir! Choir! Choir!, a performance by Bernice, and a special silent disco set by Halifax’s Rich Aucoin.
