How much salary cap space Toronto Maple Leafs have to spend this summer

The Toronto Maple Leafs have some big decisions ahead of them.
And whatever path their front office chooses to take, they’re going to have a pretty big budget ahead of them to do so.
As you likely know by now, the Leafs are coming off yet another disappointing playoff exit. While the team picked up seven wins in a postseason run for the first time since 2002, a crushing Game 7 playoff loss in the second round against the Florida Panthers left a sour taste in the fanbase’s mouths.
Pretty much everyone who’s watched the Leafs play might have a different idea of how exactly to fix the team.
And for the first time in a while, Toronto has somewhat of a blank slate if they want to implement major changes.
Primarily, the Leafs have to figure out what to do with a trio of free agents.
Much of the conversation in Leafs Nation is centred around John Tavares and Mitch Marner, two of the team’s highest-profile forwards. After a seven-year deal for Tavares and a six-year deal for Marner are set to expire this offseason, the Leafs duo have the two highest cap hits of any players heading to free agency, making US$11 million and US$10.93 million, respectively.
Meanwhile, they’ll also have to find a way to fit in restricted free agent Matthew Knies (or perhaps risk losing him to an offer sheet).
But as of May, the Leafs have quite a clear salary cap sheet moving forward.
Based on numbers from PuckPedia, the Leafs are set to see US$22,133,668 come off their books this offseason.
| Ā | 2024-25 | 2025-26 | Difference |
| Goalies | $3,266,667 | $6,166,667 | -$2,900,000 |
| Defence | $24,580,000 | $25,698,102 | -$1,118,102 |
| Forwards | $62,001,770 | $35,850,000 | $26,151,770 |
| Buried | $300,000 | $300,000 | $0 |
| Total | $90,148,437 | $68,014,769 | $22,133,668 |
All above figures are in USD.
Given that the salary cap is expected to be at US$95.5 million next year, the Leafs will actually have US$26,685,231 to work with in order to re-sign their own players, or go and target some other free agents.
With free agency a little under a month and a half away, it’ll be fascinating to see what exactly the roster will look like when they hit the ice once again next fall.
