Toronto Mayor John Tory hopes U.S President Donald Trump’s recent positive COVID-19 result, pressures everyone to take the virus more seriously.

Tory took to Twitter to share his condolences with the president after Trump announced he and his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, had tested positive for COVID-19 on October 2.

“I wish President Trump & his wife Melania Trump a quick recovery from #COVID19,”  said Tory in a tweet.

“I hope this sends a message to everyone across the US, here in Toronto and around the world: If the President of the United States and his wife can get COVID-19, you can get COVID-19.”

Toronto continues to see more cases of coronavirus as Ontario grapples with the second wave after reporting 229 cases, almost half of what the province had reported overall. The Government of Ontario reported 538 new coronavirus cases on Thursday morning.

“Each and every one of us need to take #COVID19 seriously. Wear a mask, wash your hands, keep your distance as much as possible, and – outside of work and school where there are precautions in place – stick to the people you live with,” said Tory.

The United States has recorded 7,213,419 cases, 206,402 deaths and 298,207 in the last seven days as of October 1, per the CDC.
