Mayor John Tory is in self-isolation.

According to Toronto mayor, he is acting on advice provided by the city’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa, who updated her medical recommendation for all Toronto residents as part of the City’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“To protect the health of all Toronto residents, she has recommended that anyone who has travelled outside Canada in the last 14 days should self-isolate for 14 days,” said Tory in a statement.

“Having returned from a business mission in London, England, on Wednesday, this advice would also apply to me. As a result, I will be going into self-isolation for the next 12 days as per Dr. de Villa’s advice.”

The mayor added that “right now, I have no symptoms whatsoever and feel great.”

Throughout this self-isolation, Tory said he will continue doing his job as mayor.

On Thursday, the Prime Minister’s Office indicated that Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, the wife of Justin Trudeau, had tested positive for COVID-19. Grégoire Trudeau was also recently in London.

“As the Prime Minister said earlier today, this must be a Team Canada effort. I am committed to supporting that effort,” said Tory. “Here in our city, it must also be a Team Toronto effort. Over the coming weeks, my focus will be on making sure all governments are doing everything they can to help people get through this.”

Tory’s news came minutes after the City of Toronto announced it would be shutting down major services as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Effective March 14 until April 5, all licensed childcare centres will be closed and there will be cancellation of March Break camps.

“Now, it is time for that solidarity, that support, that love, and yes, that sacrifice to come to the fore again. We will come through this together,” said Tory. “We will in fact emerge stronger and we will once again show why we live in the greatest city in the greatest country in the world.”
