On Friday night, the Toronto Blue Jays looked like they might be the best they’ve ever been in their entire franchise history.
On Saturday night, the Blue Jays might’ve found their kryptonite.
The Blue Jays ran into Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who pitched a complete-game, four-hit performance to beat Toronto 5-1 in Game 2 of the World Series.
While Toronto left four runners on base, the 27-year-old All-Star seemingly had answers for everything the Blue Jays were sending his way.
Toronto manager John Schneider didn’t have too many answers for his team’s tough offensive night, but did give his flowers to the opposing pitcher.
“I think he made it hard for us to make him work. He was in the zone, split was in and out of the zone. It was a really good performance by him,” Schneider said in his postgame press conference. “It’s the first time we have seen him, so you get some feedback and hopefully make some adjustments. But really I think right now, you’re worried about [Game 3 starter Tyler] Glasnow.”
On Toronto’s end, they got 6.2 innings from Kevin Gausman before he was eventually pulled by Schneider.
“I thought Kev matched him pitch for pitch, really,” Schneider said about Gausman’s performance. “They both had low pitch counts. It was kind of a classic pitchers’ duel and they made a couple more swings.”
The complete game win from Yamamoto was the first in the World Series since 2015, as per Sportsnet’s Blake Murphy.
“Man, it’s hard to do. I get why [Dodgers manager Dave Roberts] let him go,” Schneider said. “He was that good. I think that the baseball fan, right, they probably appreciate that.
“You have to appreciate a complete game. So you never know. You never know when someone’s going to have it. Every game is different. So you never really discount anything. Who knows what’s going to happen on Game 3. It’s baseball and you got to kind of react in realtime.”
Roberts had heaps of praise for his starter, but perhaps one compliment summed it up best.
“He could’ve gone another 30-40 pitches,” Roberts said.
