Seven brands of apricot kernels recalled due to cyanide poisoning

Mar 14 2021, 5:49 pm

Health Canada has issued a recall for multiple brands of apricot kernels because they may cause cyanide poisoning.

The products contain an excessive amount of amygdalin, a natural toxin, which Health Canada says may cause acute cyanide poisoning if ingested.

Products from Apricot Power, Chen-Chen, Double Happiness, Earth Notions, Natural Herbs Trading, Organic Traditions, and Surrey Natural Foods are being recalled.

The items were sold across Canada, both in stores and online.

“Apricot kernels naturally contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide after being eaten,” Health Canada said.

“The human body can eliminate small amounts of cyanide, but larger amounts can result in cyanide poisoning, which could lead to death.”

Symptoms of cyanide poisoning include weakness, confusion, anxiety, restlessness, headache, nausea, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, seizures, and cardiac arrest.

Images of the recalled products can be found below. Health Canada is advising that they be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.

Anyone who thinks they have become sick from consuming one of the recalled products should call their doctor.
