13 former Toronto Blue Jays who are now free agents

Nov 17 2025, 6:01 pm

MLB free agency got underway earlier this month, and a number of former Toronto Blue Jays are in search of new homes.

There haven’t been any major signings to date, as MLB teams and players tend to remain quite patient when free agency begins; however, that should change soon.

The Blue Jays themselves are being linked to several big-name free agents. They also have a few of their own, including Bo Bichette, who they are hoping to bring back. That said, here’s a look at other Jays from past years who are up for grabs on the free-agent market.

Danny Jansen

  • Most recent team: Milwaukee Brewers
  • Age: 30
  • Position: C

Danny Jansen has bounced around a little bit since being traded by the Blue Jays in 2024. He wound up finishing that season out with the Boston Red Sox, before signing with the Tampa Bay Rays last offseason. He was once again dealt in 2025, this time to the Milwaukee Brewers. He’ll be searching for a more permanent home this time around.

Justin Turner

  • Most recent team: Chicago Cubs
  • Age: 40
  • Position: INF

Despite being 40 years old, Justin Turner recently made it clear that he hopes to continue playing in 2026. After spending part of the 2024 season with the Jays, he appeared in 80 games with the Chicago Cubs in 2025, hitting .219 with three home runs and 18 RBI.

Marcus Stroman

  • Most recent team: New York Yankees
  • Age: 34
  • Position: SP

It’s been quite some time since Marcus Stroman suited up with the Blue Jays. The 34-year-old has since spent time with the New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, and the New York Yankees. His 2025 season saw him get released in early August after posting a 6.23 ERA through nine starts.

Jordan Romano

  • Most recent team: Philadelphia Phillies
  • Age: 32
  • Position: RP

While 2025 wasn’t a season to remember for Stroman, it was even worse for former Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano. The Jays chose to part ways with Romano after the 2024 season, and that appeared to be a wise decision. He posted an ugly 8.23 ERA with the Philadelphia Phillies, and may be in tough to get an MLB job next season.

Rowdy Tellez

  • Most recent team: Texas Rangers
  • Age: 30
  • Position: 1B

Rowdy Tellez struggled with the Seattle Mariners before being DFA’d in late June. With the Texas Rangers, however, the 30-year-old improved his play, slashing .259 with six home runs and 22 RBI in 50 games.

Cavan Biggio

  • Most recent team: Kansas City Royals
  • Age: 30
  • Position: Utility

Cavan Biggio has had a tough go of things since departing the Blue Jays organization. Once viewed as a very good prospect, the 30-year-old suited up for 37 games with the Kansas City Royals in 2025, hitting just .174.

Randal Grichuk

  • Most recent team: Kansas City Royals
  • Age: 34
  • Position: OF

Another player who has bounced around a lot since departing the Jays is Randal Grichuk, who split the 2025 season between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Royals. In a combined 113 games, he hit .228 with nine home runs and 27 RBI.

Liam Hendriks

  • Most recent team: Boston Red Sox
  • Age: 36
  • Position: RP

Liam Hendriks last appeared with the Blue Jays in 2015, but it was in the following years with the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox where he blossomed into a star talent. Unfortunately, the 36-year-old was forced to sit out 2024 due to Tommy John surgery and struggled to stay healthy in 2025, pitching just five innings with the Boston Red Sox.

Tim Mayza

  • Most recent team: Philadelphia Phillies
  • Age: 33
  • Position: RP

Tim Mayza hasn’t been able to replicate what was an outstanding 2023 season with the Blue Jays. He pitched a combined 16.2 innings at the Major League level in 2025, split between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Phillies. The results were middling at best, as he had a 3.78 ERA over that span.

Erik Swanson

  • Most recent team: Toronto Blue Jays
  • Age: 32
  • Position: RP

After being DFA’d by the Blue Jays in June, Erik Swanson failed to latch on with another MLB organization. The 32-year-old was superb with the Jays in 2023, but struggled to stay healthy in each of the past two seasons.

Trevor Richards

  • Most recent team: Arizona Diamondbacks
  • Age: 32
  • Position: RP

After parts of four seasons with the Blue Jays from 2021 to 2024, Trevor Richards was traded to the Minnesota Twins and wound up spending a good chunk of 2025 in Triple-A. In total, he pitched 5.2 innings at the MLB level, split between the Royals and Diamondbacks.

Steven Matz

  • Most recent team: Boston Red Sox
  • Age: 34
  • Position: RP

Steven Matz is no longer the starter he was when he pitched with the Jays in 2021. He’s instead turned into a solid reliever. After being acquired by the Red Sox in 2025, he put up a stellar 2.08 ERA in 21.2 innings.

Genesis Cabrera

  • Most recent team: Minnesota Twins
  • Age: 29
  • Position: RP

After appearing in 69 games with the Blue Jays in 2024, Genesis Cabrera had a tumultuous 2025 season that saw him throw innings for the Mets, Cubs, Pirates, and Twins. Overall, it led to just 28 combined innings, during which time he had a 6.54 ERA.
