Long before Instagram and the age of epic foods meant to be photographed (but not always eaten), there was San Remo and this sandwich:
While the cold cut version loaded with an array of cured meats, cheese, tomato, lettuce, crispy fried onions, and spiced-up mayo is among the most epic, the Italian bakery and deli on Royal York also does five-foot vegetarian and roast beef versions.
Constructed daily on a massive – we’re talking five feet long – crusty loaf for 15+ years now, these hero sandwiches are available for sale by the slab and on display at the sandwich counter.
For the uninitiated, San Remo is a magical place that’s so popular that it’s seemingly always expanding across neighbouring storefronts.
It’s well worth the pilgrimage but be warned the place can be a zoo, and to guarantee a slice of the pie (or the doughnuts, or the sandwiches, or anything really) you need to go early. Anytime afternoon and you’re in jeopardy of missing out on top picks.
The deli counter has moved into an adjacent storefront in recent years, but it’s hardly alleviated the chaos in the bakery, that boasts an espresso bar, sandwich counter, hot table, and is stocked with seasonal sweets and notable staples like doughnuts.
