Schroder having career year after trade away from Raptors

Some 10 months out from moving on from the Toronto Raptors, point guard Dennis Schroder is having a career year in Brooklyn.

Now in his second year with the Nets, Schroder’s 18.6 points per game aren’t quite at his career-high of 19.4 set in 2017-18, but he’s excelling in other areas, including a career-high 6.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

In terms of the more advanced stats, Schroder’s .099 Win Shares/48 is the highest mark of his career, as well as an offensive box plus-minus of 1.2, tied for the highest mark of his career.

For comparison’s sake, Schroder averaged 13.7 points, 6.1 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 51 games for Toronto last season.

Signing prior to last season on a two-year deal, things didn’t quite work out for Toronto and the 2023 FIBA World Cup MVP, who was eventually relegated to the Raptors bench midseason after beginning the year as their starting point guard.

In February, Schroder and Thaddeus Young were sent from the Raptors to Brooklyn in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie, who was subsequently waived by Toronto. Essentially, Toronto got nothing in return for him, in a true change-of-scenery style trade, with Schroder being deemed somewhat redundant once the franchise acquired Immanuel Quickley.

But while he’s having a strong campaign in his first full year away from Toronto, that might actually lead to Schroder being on the move once again. With the Nets being 10-14 and in eighth place in the Eastern Conference, the organization appears to be looking at the long-term future that the 31-year-old might not fit into moving forward.

ESPN’s Shams Charania named Schroder (along with teammates Dorian Finney-Smith and Cam Johnson) as possible trade candidates. And while multiple teams could be the final destination for the Nets trio, Charania named one Western Conference contender as a possible suitor for their services.

“The Warriors are among the teams that have expressed interest in those three players,” Charania said via a source.

We’ll keep our eyes out to see if Schroder does in fact hit the trade market, having already played for seven teams in his 12-year NBA career.
