Canadian men’s soccer team makes history with another win in Europe

The Canadian men’s national soccer team just did something that they’ve never done before.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup less than a year away, the Canadian men have been hard at work prepping for the tournament. Most recently, Canada has been touring Europe for a pair of friendlies against UEFA nations.

Things started great with a 3-0 Canadian victory against Romania last week, and they followed that up with a gutsy 1-0 win in Wales on Tuesday afternoon.

The victories represent the first time in the program’s history, dating all the way back to 1912, that Canada has defeated two UEFA opponents in consecutive games on European soil.

Canada is currently ranked 28th in the world by FIFA, ahead of both Romania (48th) and Wales (31st), but the team was coming off a disappointing exit from the Gold Cup back in June.

The win in Romania marked the first time that the Canadian men have won a match in Europe since 2011, when they defeated Belarus at a match held in Turkey.

Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Ali Ahmed led the charge in the match against Romania, scoring his first international goal for Canada and setting up teammate Jonathan David for another. In Wales, it was Derek Cornelius’ first goal with Canada that powered them to a victory.

Canada’s last win against Wales came all the way back in May 1986 with a 2-0 decision at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium.

Canadian goalkeepers Maxime Crepeau and Dayne St. Clair were perfect in the two matches, not allowing a single goal against either Romania or Wales.

Canada’s next scheduled match is set for Oct. 10 against Australia in Montreal.
