Toronto Blue Jays reveal trade deadline wish list

The Toronto Blue Jays are looking to add to their roster in the coming week.

Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins has never been one to show his hand too much in negotiations, but he did reveal a bit of what the Jays are in the market for during a media availability with reporters on Monday.

Entering Monday, Toronto sits 45-38, good enough for the second wild-card spot in the American League and three games back of the New York Yankees for the AL East divisional lead.

According to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith, Atkins told reporters that he’s looking to potentially add pitching depth, as well as a right-handed batter, with the Jays likely parting ways with some of their prospect pool to do so.

It should be noted that Toronto doesn’t exactly have its shortage of righties on their roster. Of the Jays’ players with the top-six games played this season (Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Ernie Clement, George Springer, Alejandro Kirk, and Myles Straw), all six are right-handed batters.

Should the Blue Jays be trade deadline buyers?

For the Blue Jays’ front office, 2025 seems like as sensible a year as any to be buyers in the coming weeks.

FanGraphs is giving Toronto a 63.8 per cent odds to make the postseason, up from 43.4 per cent to start the season. Given that Toronto is still chasing its first playoff win since 2016, a few extra roster additions would be welcomed by a fanbase starving for some postseason success.

Of the MLB’s 30 teams, 22 are either in a playoff spot or within five games of one, meaning only eight teams can probably count themselves as truly “out” of the postseason hunt at this point in time. Over the next few weeks, a clearer picture should emerge of who Toronto’s trading partners may be.

The trade deadline is scheduled for July 31 at 6 p.m. ET.
