New York Mets have trade interest in Toronto Blue Jays All-Star Guerrero: report

MLB teams seem to be well aware of the ongoing saga between the Toronto Blue Jays and first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

The Blue Jays recently agreed to a contract with Guerrero, though it wasn’t the long-term deal the fan base had hoped for. Instead, management inked the four-time All Star to a one-year deal worth $28.5 million.

Guerrero can become a free agent next offseason if he remains unsigned. Blue Jays fans are praying the team can work out a long-term deal in the near future, though there have been reports that the two sides are far apart in talks.

It seemed like only a matter of time before other teams around the league began inquiring about the 25-year-old, and based on a report from SNY’s Andy Martino, the New York Mets have done just that.

“The Mets have spoken with the Toronto Blue Jays this winter about Guerrero, league sources say, though those sources characterized the conversations as ‘checking in,'” he wrote.

Martino quickly followed it up by saying a deal between the two sides is far from certain. Since his report, however, two MLB insiders, Mike Rodriguez and Hector Gomez, have reported that the Mets are indeed pushing for the Blue Jays slugger.

Losing Guerrero, whether it be via trade or free agency, would not go over well with the Blue Jays fan base. Fans are already frustrated with the front office after failing to land any of the top stars available in free agency, and losing Guerrero would set many over the top.

Guerrero isn’t the only big piece the Blue Jays could soon move on from, either, as Bo Bichette is also set to become a free agent next offseason. There are reports that Bichette has zero interest in an extension and is as good as gone from Toronto.

Should the Blue Jays move on from both Guerrero and Bichette, it would signal an outright rebuild in Toronto and could lead to some very long and painful seasons ahead.
