The Toronto Blue Jays just might be getting a bit of extra bullpen help down the stretch.
On Monday, the Blue Jays made the choice to call up prospect Trey Yesavage to their Triple-A affiliate in the Buffalo Bisons, according to MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson.
Yesavage, Toronto’s 2024 first-round pick out of East Carolina, is the No. 26-ranked prospect in all of baseball, and the Jays’ top prospect, per MLB.com.
In his first year as a pro, he’s been on a bit of a speed run through the minor league system.
Yesavage had four appearances with the Vancouver Canadians, seven appearances with the Dunedin Blue Jays, and eight appearances with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats before the reported move to Triple-A Buffalo.
Will Yesavage play for the Blue Jays this year?
In 19 appearances this season, he’s topped 80 pitches just once, while also playing more than five innings on just one occasion. But he’s been a tough nut to crack when he’s on the mound.
He’s picked up a 3.01 ERA with 134 strikeouts in 80.2 innings. Having faced 317 batters this season, he’s struck out a remarkable 42 per cent of them, while walking just 30 batters.
Of his 19 appearances, 18 have been starts, though he’d be more likely to play for the Blue Jays out of the bullpen as is custom for young pitchers late in the season.
“There’s always one eye on that small chance Yesavage could help Toronto in 2025. Those odds still aren’t overwhelming by any means, but they keep growing and this move to Triple-A only builds some momentum,” Matheson wrote.
As it inches closer to September, when MLB teams can expand their rosters to 40 players, keep an eye out for the Blue Jays to take a chance on the 22-year-old for his first MLB appearance.
