Fans charged for flying drones above Toronto Blue Jays playoff games
While the New York Yankees had fans run onto their field to interrupt their playoff games, the Toronto Blue Jays almost had a few flying high above theirs.
The Toronto Police Emergency Management and Public Order Unit reported that they “used specialized drone detection technology to identify and intercept three unauthorized drone flights over Rogers Centre,” taking place this past weekend in Games 1 and 2 of the ALDS.
Two people were charged with flying “micro-drones,” tiny flying machines with cameras that weigh approximately half a pound.
In the same statement, the Toronto Police Service wanted to remind the public that “Rogers Centre is a no-fly zone during all Blue Jays postseason games. This restriction applies without exception, including to micro-drones weighing less than 249 grams. All drone operators are responsible for knowing and following federal aviation rules and regulations.”
No motive for the drones, nor information about how much they were charged, was available in the release.
The Blue Jays won both games at home and eliminated the Yankees in Game 4 in New York on Wednesday night. They await the winner of the Detroit Tigers/Seattle Mariners series.
