Throughout his time as president of the Toronto Blue Jays, Mark Shapiro hasn’t always been a fan favourite.
Until this week, Shapiro’s Blue Jays had gone nine years without a single playoff victory, getting swept out of three first-round matchups in 2020, 2022, and 2023.
Shapiro and general manager Ross Atkins had heard the ire of Blue Jays fans for nearly a decade, wondering how long the duo would remain in charge, given their track record of putting out teams that fell short of their ultimate goal.
While the Blue Jays had often been labelled “World Series contenders” in the preseason, disappointment in one form or another was the ending to the Jays’ story each year.
But after knocking the New York Yankees off in a four-game showing to advance to the American League Championship Series, the often mild-mannered Shapiro had a friendly chirp for his divisional rival.
While star player Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and manager John Schneider were a bit more direct with their jabs at the Yankees, Shapiro opted for a subtle burn.
“The silence in Yankee Stadium, that’s the greatest sound,” said Shapiro after the game, per Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi. I’ve heard it twice in my career. And as much as I would always want to celebrate at home, this would be the second-best place in the world, because there’s nothing better than hearing complete silence and just 30 guys in the middle of the field. It’s unbelievable.”
While working in Cleveland’s front office, Shapiro’s team also ousted the Yankees in New York in Game 4 of the 2007 ALDS.
