MLB's top agent is a big fan of Blue Jays ownership group

The Toronto Blue Jays haven’t always had the most popular ownership group — but they might have one of the sport’s most important fans.

Speaking to a group of reporters this week at the league’s general manager meetings, MLB agent Scott Boras hyped up Toronto’s top brass, headed up by chairman Edward Rogers III, the latest family member to head up the telecommunications giant.

Boras offered up some praise for Rogers — both the person and the entity — in a joint byline between Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith and Shi Davidi.

Earlier this year, Rogers acquired an additional 37.5% stake in Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment from Bell, doubling their previous investment in the parent group of seven Toronto sports teams, including the Maple Leafs and Raptors. Rogers also owns Sportsnet, which serves as the Blue Jays’ primary broadcaster, as well as having national NHL rights through 2026.

“I think the Blue Jays are in a new state of being with Edward [Rogers], being where he is [and] his commitment to sports in total,” Boras said. “I think as a businessman, for his operation and communications, he’s a behemoth in sport. There really are few in sport that are [comparable], I’ve been saying this about Toronto for years, and now with the recent [sale], I would imagine that he probably wants to be involved in some other sports where they wear helmets, I don’t know.”

Boras is the agent of top free agent Juan Soto, as well as players such as Gerrit Cole, Pete Alonso, and Bryce Harper, to name just a few. With the Blue Jays being one of the teams linked to having interest in Soto’s services, it’s a positive sign for Jays fans to see Boras speak highly of their ownership group.

“The idea of it is that there is really no ownership group that has that level of investment and then distribution to a nation unilaterally in 40 million people,” Boras continued. “So it’s a sports entertainment juggernaut and should be viewed as such.”

While the future of the Blue Jays’ offseason and future is still unclear, it seems to be positive that the man who helps control the contracts of many of baseball’s biggest stars has taken a liking to their ownership group.
