Former Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons isn’t hiding who he’s supporting in this year’s MLB playoffs.
Gibbons was on an episode of Sportsnet’s Jays Talk Plus with Blake Murphy and Julia Kreuz to chat about his experience in Toronto and his thoughts on the current Blue Jays.
“There’s something different about up there, naturally… You got one team in the whole country,” Gibbons told the hosts.
Gibbons spent parts of 11 seasons managing the Blue Jays, going about as close to an even record as you can get. Over the course of his time in Toronto, he ended up with 793 and 789 losses, averaging out to a .501 record.
"There's something special about [Toronto]… the fans were always fair. If you give them a good effort and you play winning baseball, they love you."

Although Gibbons has worked in the New York Mets and Kansas City Royals organizations at both the major and minor league levels, the Jays remain the only MLB team for which he has served as manager.
Gibbons’ two best years came in 2015 and 2016, when his Blue Jays teams made consecutive trips to the American League Championship Series, the same round this year’s team will be kicking off this Sunday.
And while he had his ups and downs in two stints managing the team, Gibbons spoke about what was mostly a positive relationship with the Blue Jays faithful.
“The fans were always fair. If you give them a good effort and you play winning baseball, they love you….It’s fun to watch; it’s well deserved. I hope they win it all. We couldn’t quite get there; I hope they do it this year. ”
Gibbons had spent the last two seasons as the bench coach of the Mets, though it was announced earlier this month that he would not be returning to the role.
