Blue Jays lose three players in first moves of offseason

The Toronto Blue Jays were busy on Monday night.

Less than a week after the 2024 MLB season ended with the Los Angeles Dodgers winning the World Series, the Blue Jays made nine transactions to kick off their offseason.

But while you might be expecting the announcement of a blockbuster trade or Vlad Guerrero contract extension, well, they’re all pretty standard end-of-season minutiae that the organization announced themselves.

Toronto saw one new player join the organization when they claimed RHP Michael Petersen off waivers from the Marlins.

On the flip side, three — and potentially four — players are leaving the organization for other teams.

Infielder Luis De Los Santos was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets, lefty pitcher Génesis Cabrera cleared waivers and elected free agency, and right-handed pitcher Luis Frías cleared waivers and is now a free agent. Additionally, right-handed pitcher Emmanuel Ramírez was designated for assignment, meaning he’ll likely find himself in a new home soon.

And lastly, four players have been added to the team’s pool of available players.

Right-handed pitchers Alek Manoah and Jordan Romano, outfielder Daulton Varsho, and infielder Will Wagner were reinstated from the 60-day IL, which is more of a paper transaction than anything given that their stays would’ve expired before spring training regardless.

Toronto finished last in the American League East with a 74-88 record in 2024, despite having expectations of potentially challenging for a World Series. They get a chance to reconcile with the disappointing season come March 27, when they host the Baltimore Orioles for their home opener at the Rogers Centre.

With the MLB offseason now in full swing, it’ll be a long few months before we start seeing players back at spring training complexes in February. For now, diehard baseball fans will spend a lot of time staring at their phones, itching for the news of more transactions to come in.
