Blue Jays provide definitive answer on potential Bichette trade

It doesn’t appear as though Toronto Blue Jays fans should expect to see Bo Bichette traded this offseason.

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding Bichette for months now, as the 26-year-old hasn’t always appeared to be all that thrilled about remaining with the Blue Jays long-term. To his credit, however, he was on record in September saying he wants to win with his friend, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., in Toronto.

While those latest comments did help curb some outside noise, plenty is beginning again with the offseason here. Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins was asked today about the potential of trading his shortstop and shut it down almost immediately.

What makes this particularly interesting is that Bichette’s contract is up at the end of the 2025 season, and he no longer has arbitration rights. Atkins seemingly not having any interest in moving him suggests he’s instead hoping for the two sides to work out an extension.

From Bichette’s perspective, however, jumping right into an extension may not be the wisest play. The two-time All-Star is extremely talented but is coming off of a career-worst season in which he hit just .225 in 81 games. A major bounceback should be in store and would allow for him to sign a much bigger deal.

Regardless of Bichette’s situation, this offseason figures to be filled with major changes for the Blue Jays. Massive improvements need to be made after a disappointing 74-88 record in 2024.

One major improvement many are hoping to see is the signing of Juan Soto, as the Blue Jays have been linked to the superstar outfielder. Should they miss out on him, however, plenty of other highly sought-after players are available on the free-agent market as well.
