Cabrera was recently DFA’d by the Cardinals after they signed Ryan Tepera. The 26-year-old has pitched to a 5.06 ERA along with a 1.56 WHIP over 32 innings out of the bullpen this season. Throughout his entire MLB career, he has a 4.14 ERA along with 198 strikeouts.
The Blue Jays selected Hernandez in the 14th round of last year’s MLB Draft. He has been hyped up by scouts for his power at the plate and will be a player to keep an eye out for as time progresses.
With this acquisition, and the pending return of Hyun-jin Ryu, the Blue Jays will need to make some room to keep their 40-man roster intact. Some potential pitchers that could be removed from the current roster are Mitch White, Trent Thornton, and Thomas Hatch, though the Blue Jays haven’t announced anything yet.
While this is not a blockbuster for the Blue Jays, it is an improvement to their bullpen on a team with World Series aspirations. Despite a somewhat inconsistent first half of the season, they currently sit third in the AL-East with a 54-43 record, and will look to further improve upon that this evening when they take on the Seattle Mariners in game one of a three-game series.
