Toronto's newest Mexican restaurant for Birria tacos

Apr 22 2021, 4:24 pm

Birria Balam is the city’s newest Mexican restaurant where you can get your hands on authentic and delicious Birria tacos in Toronto.

The restaurant has only been open for a month but has transformed its space at 147 Spadina Avenue into an authentic Mexican eatery that embraces its native traditions and showcases bold art and colours.

What makes Birria Balam stand out, besides its colour palette, is its menu. Though it is limited, each combo includes three tacos, one consomé (a type of soup), soda and two salsas, green and red.

Combo one is $24 for three Quesa Birria tacos, a crispy quesadilla with Birria, and combo two is $21 for three sauve tacos.

If you’re looking for more of a kick, add their Salsa Macha to your order for an extra $2. Birria Balam recommends stirring it into your consomé for more flavour.

Chef’s Julio Guajardo and Kate Chomyshyn are partners in life and the restaurant business. Together the pair teamed up with Matty Matheson to bring Birria Balam to life.

“Two of my favourite chefs and just beautiful people! Thank you for letting me into your world and working together in bringing a dream to life,” said Matheson in an Instagram post back in March.

Matheson has had an eventful year despite the pandemic, having also opened a smash burger restaurant, Matty’s Patty’s Burger Club at 923a Queen Street West, back in October 2020.
