Toronto Thai restaurant shifts business model to support community

In light of all that has changed across the city (and the world) over the last several months, one of Toronto’s premier Thai restaurants has shifted its business model.

Bangkok Garden has been serving the community authentic Thai food since 1982. Now, the downtown eatery is feeding frontline workers for free, and offering grocery and wine pickup from its storefront, in addition to continuing to offer classic dishes for takeout.

During these difficult times, the restaurant has provided meal drops at the YWCA Toronto, and has partnered with Sustain the Line, Meals TO Heal, and Stand TOgether Canada to deliver hot meals to local hospital staff through private donations.

To date, Bangkok Garden has delivered 300 meals, and the eatery’s next drop is scheduled for frontline staff at CAMH. The restaurant is also offering 30% off all phone and take-out orders for frontline workers — including clinic and hospital workers, and grocery store staff.

“We think it’s important for us to continue to serve our local community the best we can during this unprecedented time,” Marie Picton, executive manager of Bangkok Garden, said in a release.

“Through amazing partnerships with community organizations, we have been able to share our nourishing authentic Thai dishes with vulnerable populations and frontline workers.”

The restaurant’s doors remain closed for dine-in service for now, but other products and services are available for pickup or delivery to support the community at this time.

Thai Grocery Pick-up is one of the options, which allows you to order a grocery kit online that’s filled with kitchen essentials and house-made goodies, like Thai curry paste and teas.

Family meals, suitable for one, two, or four people, are also available. And for those who would like to pair dinner with a drink, wine, and beer are available for preordering online and pick-up at the restaurant’s storefront.

Every Wednesday, in honour of Canada Takeout Day, the restaurant is offering 20% off all takeout orders that are called in, while takeout and delivery meals will come with a complimentary spring roll — including those placed through delivery apps.

It may be said that “you can’t please everyone,” but Bangkok Garden clearly intends to try.
