Wonderful Washington: Colchuck Lake is a must-visit for avid hikers

Colchuck Lake is every hiker’s dream: a medium-to-difficult trail resulting in gorgeous views. Be ready to hike and climb across dirt trails and boulders for four miles before finally making it out to the beautiful spot.

Along the hike, you may encounter deer, goats, and of course, stunningly gorgeous scenery.

For your own safety, please make sure you are prepared before heading out on your next adventure. Information on how to prepare for your trip and stay safe while on your hike is available from waparks.org and parks.wa.gov. Always remember to leave no trace, pack out what you pack in, stick to designated trails, and refrain from feeding wildlife — and please note that irresponsibly taken selfies (even if they look great for the ‘gram) can be fatal.

Colchuck Lake is hidden in the Central Cascades of Leavenworth, Washington.

How do you get there? 

Colchuck Lake is only a three-hour drive away from Seattle. Get on the I-5 North, and take WA-522 E and US-2 E to Icidle Road in Chelan County. From there, Take Icicle Creek Road to ND-7601 and follow the road for approximately 12 miles. You’ll get to a parking lot, where you’ll see signs and trails pointing to the lake. Follow the signs and you’ll soon catch a glimpse of one of Washington’s prettiest lakes. 

What’s there? 

When you first catch a glimpse of the lake, your jaw will drop. Seriously. With a backdrop of snowy mountains and bright skies, the aquamarine waters will be ever so inviting.

After your hike, feel free to picnic, take a nap under a tree, or jump into the water — we’re warning you, though, the glacier water is freezing cold.

If you’re planning on camping out by the lake, an overnight reservation permit is required from May 15 to October 31. We highly suggest entering the lottery for an overnight pass.
