Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best officially announced her retirement during a press conference Tuesday morning.
After serving for almost three decades, her official resignation date is set for September 2, 2020.
“It was a decision I wrestled with, but it was time,” she said. “When you know its time to go, it’s time to go.”
Chief Best added that she “will continue to do all [she] can over the next three weeks to set this department up for a smooth transition” and welcomed Deputy Chief Adrian Diaz as the interim police chief.
