Russell Wilson and Ciara to open a high school next year

Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson and his wife, mega popstar Ciara, have announced the creation of the first-ever Why Not You Academy, a tuition-free, charter public high school.

The high school is set to open in Fall 2021 and will serve “systemically underserved students.”

The Why Not You webpage explains that the academy will offer students a personalized approach to their education needs as an extension of the belief that high-quality education should be accessible to all students.

The school is the first planned for a larger national network backed by the foundation.

“We’ve always held the belief that life’s successes start with a good education, but recognize that access isn’t always created equally for all,” said Ciara and Wilson in a press release.

The school has been a longtime dream of the duo, and it was important to them to find a way to combine traditional classroom learning with community and mentorship-based activities “in order to prepare kids for the real world.”

The school will operate in full accordance with the Washington state charter school law with a curriculum based on three pillars:

  • Personalization: Personal learning plans based on each student’s vision, passions, and goals for life following high school.
  • Leave to Learn: Opportunities to connect with industry professionals through internships and mentorships.
  • 21st Century Academics: A rigorous, relevant, and culturally responsive curriculum focused on deeper learning to support the skills needed to succeed after school, such as communicating effectively and working collaboratively to solve complex problems.
