On Thursday, Lyft announced its new Health Safety Program, a series of policies, commitments, and products designed to address the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As local governments begin to ease stay-at-home advisories, Lyft is ramping up its efforts to protect riders and drivers,” said the company in an emailed statement. “This includes leading in the establishment of new health and safety standards for ridesharing.”

There are four main components of Lyft’s new initiative:

  • Personal health certification for drivers and riders
  • Required face masks for drivers and riders
  • Health safety education for drivers and riders
  • Cleaning supplies and masks for drivers

Before entering and using a Lyft, each rider and driver will be required to self-certify that they are symptom-free. Individuals will not be permitted to ride or drive with Lyft if they have coronavirus, think they have it, or have other similar symptoms.

Riders and drivers will be required to wear a face mask or cover. Lyft says that they have ordered “hundreds and thousands” of cloth face coverings and are providing these to drivers as supplies become available.

Other new measures include passengers not being allowed to ride in the front seat. Drivers are also required to keep windows open and avoid recirculated air when possible. Naturally, fleet vehicles must be kept clean and be sanitized frequently.

The company says that anyone that doesn’t agree with the personal health certification will not be allowed to ride or drive with Lyft.
